Updated July 23, 2016 at 5:48 p.m. The Coco Fire started on Friday, July 22, 2016 due to lightning. The initial start of the fire covered 15 acres and is located 6 miles southeast of Tusayan near the junction of Forest Road 302 and 2719.
At this time, the wildfire will be monitored and managed to allow it to spread across and consume the dry fuels in an effort to restore the landscape. As those fuels burn, the fire will put smoke up in the air, but the southwesterly winds will be pushing that smoke to the northeast during the initial drying trend before any monsoon moisture comes into the area.
