Fire Transitions to Type 4 Incident with some resources being released

5/27/2022 - 11:19 am

Today, firefighters focus their efforts on getting containment line around the northern and northeastern flanks, and the last remaining, unsecured section of the fire. Engine crews continue to patrol and monitor the fire, checking for any hotspots or interior smokes that still remain. As a few pockets of interior fuel continue to burn, some smoke may be visible to areas within the vicinity of the fire.

This morning, the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management transitioned the fire to a DFFM Type 4 Incident
Commander and started the process of releasing resources to make them available for any potential new starts over the
holiday weekend. Approximately 130 personnel remain assigned to the fire, including four hand crews and 11 engines.
Aircraft is on standby and will be used, if needed. The fire is still south of State Route 82, smoldering and creeping within
grass, brush, and chaparral in steep and semi-remote terrain in the Mustang Mountain range, northeast of Elgin. The fire is
human caused, but remains under investigation.

Due to very dry vegetation, increasing temperatures, and little to no precipitation forecast, DFFM and federal partners
implemented Stage 2 fire restrictions across Southern Arizona on Wednesday. Under Stage 2 restrictions, campfires and
smoking outdoors is prohibited. Target shooting and fireworks are prohibited on State Trust Lands year-round.
