The Horton Fire is now 100 percent contained and remains at approximately 3 acres. Today, firefighters are improving fire lines and conducting mop up operations.
USDA Forest Service firefighters responded at approximately 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning to the fire on the Payson Ranger District which was actively burning in timber on all sides. Gila County Fire Department and Sheriff’s office responded along with the Christopher-Kohl Fire Department.
The fire was located 2 miles northeast of the Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery, Tonto Creek Estates and Tonto Creek Christian Camp. No structures were lost. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The following trails have been closed: 31 Trail or Highline Trail between Tonto Creek Fish Hatchery and See Canyon, Horton Trail or 285 Trail and Derrick Trail or 33 Trail.
