The American Red Cross is partnering with Fry’s Food Stores in Arizona to aid victims of the Goodwin Fire near Prescott and other wildfires.
Fry's customers can make coin canister donations now through July 31 to the Red Cross as they check out at any register at Fry’s Food Stores locations statewide. All proceeds will benefit the disaster relief efforts of our local Arizona chapters. In addition to collecting donations, Fry’s is providing $10,000 in supplies for personal care items given to those displaced by wildfires.
A state of emergency has been declared in Yavapai County, and county emergency management issued evacuation orders on Wednesday for 10,000 people living within Pine Flat, Breezy Pines and North Mayer. To date, two homes have been destroyed and 140 additional homes are threatened. About 1,000 first responders are working to contain the fire while battling a dangerous combination of high temperatures, low humidity and windy conditions.
The Red Cross has deployed 50 volunteers from the Arizona-New Mexico-El Paso Region and another 50 new volunteers have stepped up to help.
“On Wednesday, the Red Cross operated two shelters which provided a safe place to stay for 74 people overnight and we have 55 people currently in the shelters. Within shelters, impacted residents can find safety information, relief supplies, water, meals and support services. We are working closely with other organizations such as the Salvation Army and Southern Baptist Church to feed those at the shelter,’’ said Kurt Kroemer, Chief Executive Officer for the Red Cross Arizona-New Mexico-El Paso Region.
Red Cross teams are closely monitoring the fire and preparing additional staffing and material resources if additional evacuation orders are announced, Kroemer added.
