Due to high humidity Thursday, the Fulton Fire displayed minimal activity through the day. Fire crews focused on holding and improving established firelines and scouting alternative locations for the southern fireline. In order to establish a buffer between the fire and private property additional fire lines are being establish along Forest Road 3653 north of Gordon Canyon and Colcord Cove.
The fire will become more active today as fuels dry out. Firefighters plan to begin burnout operations to fill in unburned areas on the southeast and southwest areas of the fire. They will simultaneously bring fire out to the control line using hand and aerial ignitions to carry low intensity fire along the forest floor.
Today we will see a drying trend in the fire area. Light winds will continue as a cold front moves out of the area. Dryer and warmer conditions are expected as we move through weekend and into next week as high pressure builds over the southwest United States.
The Rim Lakes Recreation area is open. Woods Canyon and Willow Springs Lakes as well as adjacent campgrounds and the Woods Canyon Lake Store are open. The fire will continue to be active throughout the weekend. Smoke may be present in campgrounds and around lakes. The Mogollon Rim Visitor’s Center is closed. Area closures are in effect for fire affected areas on both the Tonto National Forest and the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. East bound State Route 260 is reduced to 1 lane traffic adjacent to the active fire area. Delays are possible between Christopher Creek and Forest Lakes.
