Fire managers on the Coconino National Forest are planning to burn a 100-acre area immediately south of Munds Park Tuesday morning (April 10) to help add defensible space for this community.
With prescription criteria within the parameters needed for burning in the area, the burn will take place immediately south of Odell Lake sometime after 8 a.m.
Smoke from the burn is predicted to move toward the east and northeast which may impact local communities such as Mormon Lake village and motorists on Lake Mary Road. Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle in the Munds Park, Munds Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon or drain down other nearby areas. The smoke may linger Wednesday morning in low lying areas and dissipate as the day warms up.
This burn is particularly important to protect Munds Park from severe wildfire and will be especially challenging being so close to the community. Fire crews will be working in the area today and through the weekend to prepare the area for the burn.
