The Museum Fire will be active today due to low humidity, high temperatures and wind. Accumulations of heavy fuels north of Dry Lake Hills within the perimeter continue to burn. Expect greater volumes of smoke. The prevailing southwest winds should carry the smoke to the northeast and away from Flagstaff. Growth of the fire perimeter is not expected.
Smoldering fire on the steep slopes west of Oldham Park and Little Elden Mountain continues to challenge firefighters. Aerial resources will be utilized to drop water and retardant as hot spots are detected. Initial attack and structure protection crews continue to assist the Coconino County Emergency Operations Center by filling sandbags for flood preparation. Local officials said more than 26,000 sandbags have been filled, exceeding community demand.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office has downgraded the following neighborhoods and areas from “Set” (pre-evacuation) to “Ready” (be prepared) effective immediately: Christmas Tree Estates and all areas north of Railhead west on Highway 89. Mount Elden Estates remains in “Set” status. Coconino County and the City of Flagstaff encourage residents to sign up for emergency notifications at coconino.az.gov/ready. The Coconino County Emergency Call Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 928-213-2990.
The Coconino National Forest Flagstaff Ranger District Closure Order remains in effect. Be sure to know before you go by visiting the Museum Fire InciWeb page at inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/closures/6450/ for a map of the closure area.
The public should use extreme caution when driving to and from local events on U.S. Highways 180 and 89 north of Flagstaff as firefighting vehicles are still operating in the area. Firefighter and public safety is the number one priority, and vehicle accidents are a major cause of death for wildland firefighters.
IF YOU FLY, WE CAN’T. DRONES ARE NOT ALLOWED OVER THE FIRE AND CAN IMPEDE FIRE SUPPRESSION EFFORTS.
