The Payson Ranger District will finish steps to temporarily close a section of Workman Creek Road on June 23 to protect the public from unsafe road conditions.
The closure involves Forest Road 487 (Workman Creek Road) starting one-quarter mile west of Workman Creek Falls, then continuing east/southeast and ending at the Aztec Lookout Tower on Aztec Peak.
The closure also includes Forest Road 487A (Murphy Ranch Road) starting at its intersection with Forest Road 487, then continuing north to its terminus at Murphy Ranch.
Despite recent road improvement and stabilization efforts, the road continues to deteriorate making it unsafe for use by the public. The Forest Service continues to pursue a long-term solution which will allow re-opening of the roads to the public.
According to Freddie Duncan, Payson/Pleasant Valley Deputy District Ranger, the gate will be closed below Workman Creek Falls but the road will continue to be open to foot traffic.
“We ask that people not block the gate to ensure emergency vehicles can access the area if needed,” Duncan said.
The closure is in effect until June 18, 2023, or until road conditions improve.
