The Verde Fire grew to approximately 1,960 acres on Sunday, with most of the movement to the northeast and southwest. A helicopter and airtankers were used on Sunday and are available today, if needed, to slow the fire’s spread west and south toward Ft. McDowell and the community of Rio Verde. Two crews have been ordered, and will be joining suppression efforts. Firefighter and public safety are always the highest priority. Remote and inaccessible ground and excessive heat limits where firefighters can safely engage the fire perimeter. Monsoon storms are developing around the fire area this afternoon, bring a chance of rain, but also the potential for shifting and gusty winds.
As a precaution, Forest Service Roads along State Highway 87 were closed to prevent the public from driving into several popular areas including: Lower Sycamore, Sugarloaf and Mesquite which are south and east of the Verde Fire. Smoke from the Verde Fire will continue to be throughout the day and into the evening hours.
