Bats found in Grand Canyon National Park test positive for rabies

Grand Canyon National Park has received confirmation that two bats collected along the Colorado River in the park last month tested positive for rabies. The rabies-positive bats, both Canyon Bats, were deceased at the time of collection and did not come in contact with any visitors or staff.

State puts Coconino County back into Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

Good news for folks headed up to the high country this weekend! Today, the Department of Forestry and Fire Management is taking Coconino County out of Stage II Fire Restrictions thanks to the recent rains in the area.
 
In late June, DFFM put Coconino County, just south of the Colorado River, in Stage II restrictions due to the increased fire activity and hotter temperatures.

The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Lake Havasu Field Office plans to conduct prescribed burning on the Parker Strip from Nov.

Imperial Fire Reported 20% Contained

The Imperial Fire is located on the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge on the California side of the river between Ferguson Lake and the old gauging station across from the Eureka Mine area. With an increase in relative humidity, the Imperial Fire activity has been reduced to light or moderate. “Even though the fire has slowed, this is a fire that will continue to burn in the duff and phragmites (common reed) vegetation, and with a warming trend to come, we may see this fire increase in intensity”, says Imperial Wildlife Refuge Manager Nate Caswell.

Imperial Fire Burning on California Side of Colorado River

Imperial Fire is located on the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge on the California side of the river between Ferguson Lake and the old gauging station across from the Eureka Mine area.

The perimeter of the fire is estimated at 100 acres.

Management of the fire transitioned to a Type 3 team Sunday evening to assist the local agency with fire suppression. The Imperial Fire continues to burn slowly downstream on the California side of the Colorado River and is only accessible by boat. The western side of the fire is desert upland habitat.

Fire Restrictions Announced for Bureau of Land Management

To protect the public, natural resources, and reduce the risks of wildfires, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Colorado River District has announced fire restrictions on 5.4 million acres of public lands in western Arizona and southeastern California along the Colorado River.

Effective Friday, April 25, 2014, fire and smoking restrictions will be enforced on all public lands within the BLM Kingman, Lake Havasu, and Yuma Field Office jurisdictions.  These restrictions are similar to those being implemented in other areas in Arizona.
