PHOENIX – State Route 69 has reopened between Cordes Junction at Interstate 17 and SR 69 near Prescott, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The highway had been closed because of the Goodwin Fire near Mayer.
Drivers should use extra caution in the area because of continuing firefighting operations and smoke.
Despite emergency officials announcement allowing Mayer residents to return to their homes earlier today (Thursday), the Mayer Post Office is currently without power and therefore remains closed until further notice.
The Mayer Post Office has been closed since the town’s evacuation was ordered on Tuesday, June 27. Also remaining closed is the Dewey Post Office, after complying with orders to evacuate on Wednesday.
The Goodwin Fire responded to critical weather and fuel conditions yesterday, and despite exemplary work on the ground and in the air, grew to 20,644 acres. The fire crossed State Highway 69 about half way between Poland Junction and Mayer not long after the road was closed due to heavy smoke at mid-afternoon. The section where the fire crossed Highway 69 was about a quarter mile wide. The fire then burned about 500 acres to the northeast.
