Snow storm

A powerful snowstorm is creating hazardous driving conditions on Arizona highways in higher elevations, resulting in closures of Interstate 40 in both directions west of Flagstaff and northbound Interstate 17 south of Flagstaff, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

With stretches of some state routes closed as well due to crashes and accumulating snow, travelers should consider delaying travel until ADOT snowplows are able to clear highways.

Among the closures as of 7:30 p.m. Saturday:

Multiple crashes and adverse weather conditions in the north country have forced multiple closures on Interstate 40 and numerous state highways, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Multiple crashes closed I-40 in both directions between mileposts 146 and 195. Crashes also closed State Routes 89A, 87, 238 and 64.

A winter storm warning is in effect for elevations above 6,000 feet. The heaviest snowfall was expected to occur before 8 p.m. Motorists should consider delaying traveling in areas with heavy snowfall.
