Wallow West prescribed fire project resumes as favorable weather conditions return

The Wallow West, Unit 4 East was blacklined during the week of May 14 to secure perimeter edges by burning fuels adjacent to control lines. As rain arrived and high humidities persisted, fire managers were unable to continue prescribed fire operations due to unfavorable weather conditions. The project area has now returned to conditions that are conducive to meeting landscape objectives. Firefighters plan to continue prescribed fire operations between May 30 and June 2, 2024 to complete the remaining 1,400-acres in the interior portion of the burn unit.

Alpine Ranger District plans Wallow West prescribed fire

The Alpine Ranger District plans to conduct prescribed fire operations across 4,582 acres on the Wallow West, Unit 4 East starting as early as May 14 and running through May 19, 2024 as weather conditions allow.

Fire managers will be monitoring weather conditions leading up to, during, and after implementation and will not burn during, or with high forecasted winds. Prescribed fire operations are contingent on multiple factors, including favorable weather conditions, air quality, and resource availability.
