Fire managers with the Coconino National Forest are currently monitoring a lightning-caused wildfire that was reported the morning of October 25 approximately 11 miles south of Flagstaff on the west side of Interstate 17 near the Newman Park exit.

Fire Managers are preparing to wrap up the 2024 fall prescribed burning season on the south zone of the Kaibab National Forest this week beginning with the 3055 acre Pine Flat Prescribed Fire Project located approximately 15 miles south of Williams, followed by the 1467 acre Fireball Unit on the Three Sisters Prescribed Fire Project located 5 miles northwest of Williams on the south side of FR 124.

The Lakeside Ranger District plans to conduct prescribed fire operations on the Lakeside Ranger District during the Fall months of 2024. Prescribed fire operations could start any time between October 8 through November 30, as weather and vegetation conditions allow for successful operations. Fire managers will be monitoring weather conditions leading up to, during, and after implementation to ensure conditions are favorable.

Unfavorable weather arriving to the local area overnight has persuaded Fire Managers to temporarily delay treatments on the Three Sisters Prescribed Fire Project until conditions improve that are more suitable for meeting project objectives.

Firefighters plan to conduct prescribed fire operations on the Black Mesa Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests beginning September 25 through October 31, 2024, weather permitting.

The Point project area is 814 acres and is approximately 1 mile north of Forest Lakes.  The boundaries of the project are mile marker 2 on FR 237 to FR 172 and FR 237C and constructed control lines.

The Dutch project area is 1,301 acres and is approximately 10 miles northwest of Forest Lakes.  The boundaries of the project are FR 34 and FR 100 and constructed control lines.

Fire managers on the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts of the Kaibab National Forest are planning to conduct prescribed fires throughout October as conditions allow, starting with the Three Sisters project located just north of Williams, AZ.
