Firefighting resources are responding to the lightning caused Weimer fire burning north of Forest Lakes and west of Heber-Overgaard. The fire is approximately 55 acres and is being engaged with a full suppression strategy utilizing existing forest roads and a dozer line to the north to contain the wildfire. Fire crews will work on prepping roads and the dozer line, which is expected to be constructed today. Firefighting resources assigned to the incident include four engines, three initial attack crews, one dozer, and a helicopter. The Weimer fire is burning within the Wagon Draw fire scar from 2009.
There are no structures threatened and no evacuations at this time. Smoke will be visible throughout the weekend from Highways 260, 277, and the communities of Forest Lakes and Heber/Overgaard. Smoke is expected to impact Forest Road (FR) 170, FR 99, Chevelon Canyon, Forest Lakes, and Highway 260.
Firefighters plan to begin ignition operations as early as Friday or Saturday to burn available fuels near control lines. Temporary closures may be implemented on FR170, FR 9517W and FR 9517 during ignitions.
