Fire personnel from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests responded to the Campbell Fire. Located southwest of Alpine, Arizona, on the Campbell Flat, near Campbell Blue Creek, west of Hwy 191. The fire is currently burning in the Wallow Fire burn scar, and in the Campbell Prescribed Fire planning area.
The lightning caused fire was first observed on July 10 and local Forest Service fire crews, along with a crew from Stray Horse, the Bear Divide Hotshots, Round Valley Helitack, and Air Attack, responded. A fire dozer has been ordered, along with a Type-1 Helicopter. A strategy of full suppression is being employed, using existing containment features; primarily roads.
Fire size was estimated at 80 acres as of 8:00AM on July 11, 2023. Fire personnel are working through suppression tactics and balancing fire fighter safety concerns in the area. Avoid travel in the area if possible. If in the area, please watch for heavy equipment and fire suppression activities.
Smoke is expected to continue to be visible in the coming days as suppression activities continue, particularly from Hwy 191, and the communities of Alpine and Nutrioso. An interactive smoke map at https://fire.airnow.gov/ allows you to zoom into your area to see the latest smoke conditions.
