The Rim fire was discovered on May 28, 2024 and is located on Forest Road (FR) 9350, northwest of Woods Canyon Lake near FR 300 in the dispersed camping sites. Multiple firefighting resources responded to the two-acre wildfire, including a dozer that cut a control line around it’s perimeter, stopping the forward progression of the Rim fire.
Along with the three engines already on scene, additional firefighting resources were dispatched, including an Interagency Hotshot Crew and a water tender. Fire crews are mopping up, reinforcing fire lines, carefully monitoring fire activity, and extinguishing hot spots to ensure the fire stays within established control lines. There are no current threats to communities, infrastructure, or values at risk.
Smoke will be visible from Highway 260, and the Woods Canyon Lake and Bear Canyon Lake recreation areas. To provide for public and firefighter safety, visitors are urged to take extra precautions while recreating in the area near the Rim fire. Unattended campfires are the number one cause of human caused wildfires on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Escaped campfires can quickly grow out of control and can have devastating effects on the environment. Here are some tips from Smokey Bear on How to Maintain & Extinguish Your Campfire.
