Woodbury Fire

The lack of summer monsoon activity has prompted The Tonto National Forest to lift the Woodbury Fire Area Closure effective at 6:00 am on Friday, September 6, 2019. Monsoon storms are still attempting to form and could produce locally heavy rain, so be alert and stay out of dry washes and low lying areas if a thunderstorm is visible in the distance. Please read and heed all warning signs within the Woodbury Fire Area in the Superstition Mountains.

Because of the potential for severe flooding from areas burned in the Woodbury Fire, a 7-mile, unpaved section of State Route 88 (Apache Trail) will remain closed from an area several miles east of Tortilla Flat to just west of the Apache Lake marina turnoff while the Arizona Department of Transportation continues assessing conditions.

The Woodbury is 100% contained around the perimeter edge. This does NOT mean that the fire is controlled. There is still smoke and active fire moving within the interior through pockets of unburned fuel.

Apache Lake remains closed along with State Highway 88 between Tortilla Flat and the Roosevelt Dam.  ADOT will issue a News Release later this week after conducting meetings with Tonto National Forest and other cooperating agencies.  These meetings may provide a more definitive timeline on the closure.

A Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) team has been working to assess the condition of the watersheds that were burned in the Woodbury Fire. The BAER program is designed to identify and manage potential risks to resources on National Forest System lands and reduce these threats through appropriate emergency measures to protect human life and safety, property, and critical natural or cultural resources.

Team Transition: The Central West Zone Type Three Incident Management Team made a transition to the local Type 3 Incident Commander this morning. Firefighting resources will continue to staff the Woodbury Fire and patrol the containment line. This will be the final Woodbury Fire Update, unless significant fire activity occurs.
